Shifting Winds & Smart Suspension: Tactically Tuning Portfolios for the Road Ahead

Financial Planning Investing Tax Planning Assets

At Wrought Financial Planning, we believe that managing your wealth is a dynamic process of continuous craft. We don't subscribe to the outdated "set-it-and-forget-it" school of investing. As the global economy evolves, your portfolio must evolve with it.

On May 28, 2026 we implemented a strategic, tactical rebalance.

However, we did something that traditional, automated wealth managers rarely do: we executed these trades strictly within tax-sheltered retirement accounts (like IRAs, Roth IRAs, and 401ks). Because we last rebalanced in March 2026—just over two months ago—rebalancing taxable accounts today would trigger costly short-term capital gains. As fiduciaries, we custom-tailor our execution to protect your bottom line from unnecessary tax friction.

Here is an inside look at the shifting macroeconomic terrain, the adjustments we made, and how we are building portfolios designed to thrive in this environment.

At a Glance: The Key Takeaways

  • Trimming Broad Risk: We have locked in stellar gains from the recent market run, reducing our equity overweight from 3% to 1%. We remain bullish but are taking some chips off the table.
  • Consolidating into U.S. Earnings Strength: We are deepening our preference for U.S. equities over international developed and emerging markets, backed by a blockbuster earnings season.
  • The "Smart Suspension" Upgrade: We are trimming low-yielding core bonds to fund a dynamic, multi-strategy liquid alternatives allocation to serve as an uncorrelated shock absorber.
  • Playing Defense via Geopolitics: We are maintaining our structural positions in global aerospace, defense, and gold as critical structural hedges against Middle East escalations.
  • Uncompromising Tax Efficiency: Absolutely no trades were made in taxable accounts, completely avoiding short-term capital gains tax.

1. Dialing Back the Active Risk (But Staying Pro-Growth)

The stock market has been on a tear, recovering rapidly from earlier-year lows and flirting with fresh all-time highs. However, we are now facing a different starting point. The absolute reward for maintaining a chunky equity overweight has cooled at the margin.

Furthermore, the risks that catalyzed volatility earlier this year haven't vanished; the market has simply grown accustomed to them. To protect your capital, we have dialed back our overall portfolio risk, trimming our broad equity overweight from 3% to 1%. We are keeping our growth engine running, but we are pumping the brakes slightly.

2. Navigating the Geopolitical Storm: Liberation Day vs. The Iran War

It is easy to get rattled by the nightly news. The ongoing war in Iran and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have sent WTI crude oil from $65 to $95 a barrel, pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.5%, and scaled back Fed rate cut expectations to just one potential hike or cut.

But history teaches us a valuable lesson: disciplined, risk-on investors are rewarded for staying the course during geopolitical shocks. We look at S&P 500 drawdowns to recoveries to put things in perspective. During the "Liberation Day" shock in early 2025, the market took just 11 days to fully recover. During the initial outbreak of the Iran War in February 2026, the recovery took 55 days. Markets are highly resilient; our job is to ensure your portfolio has the structural guardrails to let you sleep at night while the recovery plays out.

To hedge against these persistent structural risks, we are holding onto our globally diversified aerospace and defense stocks and keeping a robust, active allocation to gold.

3. The Fed's New "Rate Cut Cheat Code": Trimmed Mean PCE

There is a changing of the guard at the Federal Reserve. Newly confirmed Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has signaled a desire to shift the Fed's preferred inflation gauge from Core PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) to Trimmed Mean PCE.

Why does this technical detail matter to your wallet?

The massive, multi-billion-dollar AI infrastructure buildout (silicon chips, servers, memory, and cooling data centers) carries a disproportionately heavy weight in the Core PCE formula. This has artificially kept Core PCE elevated at 3.2%. By contrast, Trimmed Mean PCE drops these extreme outliers, currently sitting at a much cooler 2.4%—right on the doorstep of the Fed’s 2% target.

If Chairman Warsh successfully implements this shift, it provides a "cheat code" for the Fed to adopt a much more dovish stance and cut rates, providing a powerful tailwind for U.S. growth stocks.

To capitalize on this potential policy shift, we have consolidated our active equity risk into our highest-conviction theme: U.S. large-cap growth and AI-driven tech innovators (via BAI). Rather than owning the broad, undifferentiated market, we are focusing on the "adopters" and "enablers" who are actually using AI to drive massive corporate free cash flow.

4. Upgrading the suspension: Why Bonds Failed and Alts Stepped Up

Historically, when the stock market went down, traditional bonds went up, acting as a reliable shock absorber. But in a post-2022 world of higher structural inflation and soaring national debt, bonds have increasingly echoed equity risks rather than offsetting them. With credit spreads on corporate bonds sit at razor-thin, historically expensive levels, we are barely being compensated to take on corporate credit risk. In plain English: our brakes are slipping.

To fix this, we are executing a major structural upgrade: we are trimming our low-yielding total bond market exposure to fund a dynamic, multi-strategy liquid alternatives allocation (via IALT).

Liquid alternatives use long-short active overlays. When inflation rattles markets, stocks and bonds drop together. But liquid alts can go long or short, capturing market dispersion and providing a true, uncorrelated ballast.
